HOW "THE HOOK MAKER" BECAME BEST IN THE WORLD

During the mid-1800’s recession, metal worker Mathias Topp had an idea. He had produced nails and wire for twenty years, at the Mustad Fishing ( https://bit.ly/3rsRjPz) factory near Gjøvik, Norway. He thought it would be a great idea to manufacture fishing hooks. the year was 1832. Topp began working on a machine where steel wire went in one side and high quality hooks came out the other. By 1877, “The Hook Maker” was ready for production.

Mustad came up with an advanced ways to encrypt the blueprints and keep the location of the machine a secret. Today, one in four hooks in the world is made by Mustad. All these years later, anglers continue to choose Mustad because they do everything possible to create satisfied customers. Mustad had a reason for the secrecy as nobody could produce higher quality at a lower price.

Mustad made it a practice to send employees across the globe to find out which hooks were used in different areas.

They collected 60,000 hooks to send back to Gjøvik, so “The Hook Maker” could make stronger, cheaper versions to return to the various regions of the world. The pioneer spirit turned Mustad into the biggest fishing hook producer in the world, with a 50% global market share by the 1950’s. This might explain why to this day, the word “Mustad” simply translates into “fishing hook” in many corners of the world.
